Are you seeking feedback on unpublished work, learning a new area, meeting collaborators, exploring jobs or understanding an industry? Different meetings serve different purposes.
Examine the programme at session level
Look beyond broad themes. Review speakers, poster topics, workshops and parallel sessions. A focused meeting may offer more relevant interaction than a large multidisciplinary conference.
Measure access—not only attendance
Small discussion sessions, poster periods, trainee events and networking formats often determine whether meaningful conversations are possible.
Consider presentation opportunity
Presenting a poster or talk creates a reason for other researchers to engage with your work. Check abstract deadlines, acceptance criteria and whether travel awards are available.
Calculate total cost
Registration is only part of the expense. Include travel, accommodation, meals, visas and time away from experiments. Virtual attendance may be more appropriate when the primary goal is content rather than networking.
